Notes: This was a festival gig and therefore not 2 sets as the "Evening with..." shows are. It's kind of surprising they still flipped over to acoustic mode with no intermission and it being a big outdoor gig. The acoustic portion works really well in the smaller 2500-4000 person venues The Hip have been playing. I'm not sure how it would have came off here. Time will tell.

This would have been a hometown show for me back in the day being from Owen Sound. Many, many field parties I attended in the Grey-Bruce area had The Hip blaring in the background as the young locals with nothing better to do got soused week after week. I expect crowd reports to indicate nothing much has changed with the locals :)

Notes: I like some of the song positions here. Fully Completely is more than capable of closing down a set and with songs like Recluse, Love, Depression being played every night, moving them around in the set list is nice to see. More so for fans hitting entire runs. They are really playing Frozen a lot and the song continues to be placed in what I would call Key Set List Positions.

This is the last I'm going to comment on NOIS being played pretty much every single show. I thought this was the format that would help them kick that habit, but it just ain't so.

If this is the correct setlist and anyone did make the trek from Seattle to Victoria, The Hip should offer them a full refund. With the diversity of the full body of set lists offered so far, having something like this happen, even to just one fan, is Fully preventable and Completely unnecessary. I'm sure they played their asses off, but that is not the point.

* Set II is incomplete. Will update when the info becomes available. www.thehip.com has been posting inaccurate set lists. I don't know how the official band site could fuck this stuff up. You would think with stat trackers, etc, they would take the time to get it right (or allocate the resources). They could use a new webmaster IMHO. The Last Recluse has to be in there. It hasn't missed yet.

Tidbits:

-The Depression Suite has opened over half the shows on this tour, but has only opened 2 of the last 8 shows. I think this song works anywhere they want to put it and I think we, the fans, are going to be enjoying it for a long time to come.

- It Can't Be Nashville Every Night has only 1 appearance in the last 17 shows (06/06/2009)

- On the Verge has been MIA for 13 shows (05/16/2009)

- If Family Band is the 2nd song in the first set, The Dark Canuck will be an encore tune. This is money. Use it. Bet it.

-Something On has not appeared in 15 shows (05/15/2009)

- 13 of 14 Gift Shop's can be found in the first set. The exception was 05/16/2009 @ Massey Hall. People clapped along to the intro and it fucked the mood & build up. Clapping is gay. This is a tension and release song. Allow the tension to build. Please. If you must clap, go see Dave Matthews and clap away. That's a clap happy bunch. Frat boys fucked that scene. I digress....

- World Container has been played once: 04/29/2009. And that's too bad.

- 4 of the last 6 Coffee Girls have been acoustic

- Grace, too has only appeared in the first set 4 of 17 times. In a Tragically Hip All-Star Game, this is my lead-off hitter.

- Queen of the Furrows has appeared in 4 of the last 5 shows, Bobcaygeon in 5 of the last 6, 7 of the last 9 shows

- The last 2 IAGLIYDWs have been encores

-Blow at High Dough has had an encore slot in 6 of the last 12 shows

Looking over the set list I think the order of a couple of songs may need to be flipped. I'm only basing this on previous set lists and the patterns within. That being said, I think we probably have a fairly accurate list of the specific songs that did appear that night.

The set list as it was sent to me had Queen of the Furrows as the Set I closer. The pattern has generally been when The Depression Suite opens the first set, Love Is A First is on clean up duty so I added that one.

I don't know that the band has coupled We Are the Same songs on this tour by playing them back-to-back, so time will tell if the Coffee Girl>Morning Moon sequence happened or not.

I am going to apply the set list above to Vol 2 of the Stat Pack. Adjustments can always be made going forward.

Thanks to Bruno in the beautiful city of Chicago for being kind enough to send in the information. Now if we could only figure out where summer is...

WATERLIFE: Filmmaker fears for the Great Lakes

Pin It Now!

Here's a little something that Gord's "lent his voice to". I'm sure most of you know about the Waterkeeper Alliance and what they are trying to do to educate people on the preservation of the Great Lakes and their surrounding areas. If not check out their website.

Special to The Globe and Mail, Monday, Jun. 08, 2009
by Jennie Punter

Although not exactly this year's Jaws – with its well known “Don't go in the water” slogan – Kevin McMahon's new documentary Waterlife is nevertheless must-see cinema for anyone planning to dip a toe into one of the Great Lakes this summer.

The information in this poetic cautionary tale is probably not news to the likes of the film's narrator, Tragically Hip front man Gord Downie, who lives near Lake Ontario and supports the international citizen-led Waterkeeper Alliance. (A new Hip tune Morning Moon plays during Waterlife 's end credits.)

But over the years the state of the Great Lakes, which provide 20 per cent of the planet's fresh water, has fallen off the radar of many North American “users,” asserts McMahon, who grew up in Niagara Falls, Ont., and explored the beauty and hidden horrors of the tourist mecca in his 1991 doc The Falls .

Continute to read the article Here.

WATERLIFE is playing at these theatres in Toronto:

Canada Square (Cineplex)
2190 Yonge St.
Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu: 4:20, 6:50, 9:30

Varsity (Cineplex)
55 Bloor St. W.
Mon: 1:10, 3:50, 6:55, 9:40
Wed, Thu: 1:10, 3:50, 6:50, 9:40

I would recommend the 4:20 shows myself, but that's just me ;)

A list off the top of my head...Water Imagery in Tragically Hip songs:

~All Canadian Surf Club - aaah to be young.
~Another Midnight - this might be the weakest reference of the bunch, but they do say "river". Ha ha.
~Born in the Water - Good ol' English/French relations, eh?
~Daredevil - Brave souls or idiots? Maybe both.
~Nautical Disaster - Nothing to add
~Titanic Terrarium - I see water when I here Titanic. You?
~Poets - Makes me think of topless women swimming. What can I say? If that's not water imagery I don't know what is.
~Membership - Ice fishing
~Chagrin Falls - You say 'falls", I think water.
~Emperor Penguin - So who out there knew of the epic struggle of the Emperor Penguin before March of the Penguins can out? Hands up now.
~Lake Fever - This post's topic
~Sharks - Sharks live in the ocean. The ocean is water. The lines connect.
~The Bear - The Polar Bears are SO fucked. Say goodbye folks.
~The Dire Wolf - I don't want to be Done by no water.
~If New Orleans is Beat - Yep.
~Yer Not the Ocean - Same explanation as Chagrin, but change 'Falls' to 'Ocean'
~The Drop Off - Swimming again.
~Morning Moon - The lakes, the lakes!
~Speed River - Guelph, ON

That's all folks.

Hey All,

I am On the Verge of releasing Vol. 2 of The Tragically Hip Stat Pack for the 2009 tour. I am lacking some final details on one particular show (05/27/2009), so I am going to wait until I can confidently give you the complete package. I have developed a nice Matrix which does the math for me, Ha ha, so there will be a few more categories this time around.

Lots of other good music there too. Phish is blazing out of the gate. Can't wait to see them in a few weeks. It's been far too long.

Go Wings!

Notes: You know, with some of theses set lists there isn't really much to say. We've been here before. That being said and without consulting my "chart" what I will say about this show is I think this was the 4th appearance of The Bear (ever), Little Bones has a rare non-encore slot, Coffee Girl returns from Acoustic Exile, and Tiger the Lion closes out the first set, a job that usually goes to Love Is A First.

Derek Trucks and his band are playing at Yonge and Dundas Square tonight at 9pm. It's free. He's a top 5 guitar player among those of us above ground so if you're in the area check him out. You will not leave disappointed.

Show Notes:
100th Meridian and Honey, Please both returned to the setlist after a six show absence. Pigeon Camera was played for the first time in 10 shows and The Dire Wolf came out of it's 17 show hiatus and made its 2nd appearance this tour, paring down our "Once Played" list even further.

Here's a couple of pictures that were sent to me from Bruno in Chicago. They are from the 5/27/2009 show. Looks like he had pretty good seats, eh?

If anyone else has pictures they want to share, shoot me an email and I'll be happy to put them up. Thanks again Bruno.
