North Bay Hipstory

Pin It Now!

I was just perusing the archives on www.thehip.com and it surprised me the the boys only seem to have played up there once before.

The concert took place Feb 11, 1995, a few ambitious time of the year to hit the Bay. The concert took place at Memorial Gardens and this is what they played:

Memorial Gardens: North Bay, ON: Canada: 02/11/1995

Grace, Too
Locked In The Trunk Of A Car
Greasy Jungle
So Hard Done By
Fifty-Mission Cap
The Last Of The Unplucked Gems
Thugs
At The Hundredth Meridian
Yawning Or Snarling
Scared
Pigeon Camera
Nautical Disaster
Courage
Eldorado
Inevitability Of Death
New Orleans Is Sinking
Fire In The Hole
Daredevil

All but So Hard Done By, Last of the Unplucked Gems and Fire in the Hole have been played so far this tour, so there's a chance anything could be played. They have reined in the sprawling setlist that we saw early in the tour and since this is a festival format I would expect a greatest hits type of setlist.

Saturday is calling for a high of 25C, sunny and only a 20% chance of rain. Sounds perfect.

If you attend North Rocks the Bay, we'd love to hear from you.

Notes: Beautiful outdoor venue just south of Burlington, VT. I used to have friends that lived in Burlington and we would gather pre and post Phish festivals there. Beautiful city with the mountains and lake. A university town with a liberal attitude and Montreal just a little ways north. The boys seem to be on a "Greatest Hits Tour" since returning to the road. I guess if you're not going to hear Country Day at this venue, it's probably packed away pretty deep by now. C'est la vie.

Notes: I think this is the first time Grace, Too has featured in the encore on this tour. I know NOIS hasn't been a show opener on this tour before tonight. A fairly straight forward and hit heavy show, typical of a one set concert. The band has been off for a couple of weeks as well, so a nice way to ease back into things. I believe this was the first of all the shows that was announced way back when. It sounds as if the weather held, a nice treat for those in attendance. Funny how The Hip can pull that off, eh?

Tragically Hip Tour Stat Pack Vol. 3

Pin It Now!

v.3 Stats are from 04/24/2009 - 07/02/2009 (40 shows)

We Are the Same

Total Plays:

1. The Last Recluse (40) - Never missed. 22 first sets, 17 second sets, 1 encore. Who are you? Drop me a line if you've got something to say. mrjackstraw@gmail.com or add a comment anywhere you like.
T2. The Depression Suite (39) - Only show not played was 4/29/2009. 33 first set appearances. 23 of 40 shows have opened with this masterpiece.
T2. Now the Struggle has a Name(39) - After missing the Danforth show it has been a constant part of the rotation. 14 first sets, 18 second sets, 7 encores. 8 of the last 9 shows it has appeared in the 2nd set.
4. Morning Moon (38) - 32 of 38 have come in the first set including the last 13 shows in a row.
5. Love Is A First (35) - All but 4 have been in the first set. The last 12 shows have seen it open the 1st set 3 times, close it 8 times and encored once.
6. Coffee Girl (32) - 12 first sets, 13 second sets and 1 encore. 5 of the last 12 have been acoustic, the only WATS song to feature in this portion so far.
7. Frozen In My Tracks (29) - Didn't show up in the set list until 4/29/2009 making Frozen the last song to be played live on this tour from WATS. It has been played in 15 straight shows dating back to June 6, 2009. 5 first sets, 13 second sets, 11 encores.
8. Honey, Please (15) - 3 of the last 12????
9. Queen of the Furrows (14) - "This song is picking up momentum". That was my quote from the last Stat Pack. 2 of 12 since then. Oops.
10. The Exact Feeling (12) - Last 3 playings have all come in the first set after having never appeared in the first set before the June 17th show.
11. Speed River (11) - Speed River has froze over. 0 for the last 15.
12. Country Day (7) - I guess it was swimming in the Speed River when it froze over. Already a rarity. Too bad.

Notes: There's a real drop off from the top 7 songs by number of playings to the bottom 5. I understand there is always going to be a discrepancy, but some of these gaps are huge for such a new album. I think what surprises me the most is the quality of the songs in the lower tier. I realize this is all subjective, but I think Queen of the Furrows, Country Day and Honey Please are all top shelf Hip material. There's nothing wrong with Speed River or Exact Feeling, but there's nothing great about them either. I feel the same way about Frozen and Love Is A First.

Tidbits:

The Depression Suite, Coffee Girl, Morning Moon, The Last Recluse, Love Is A First, Now the Struggle Has A Name, Frozen In My Tracks, and of course New Orleans is Sinking have all been played every show for the last 12. These 8 songs alone accounted for nearly one third of ALL songs played over that span.

Trouble at the Henhouse jumped Day for Night in the total songs standings on the strop performances of both Gift Shop and Springtime In Vienna which have been played 8/12 and 9/12 respectively. Day for Night was hurt by the band's abandonment of Greasy Jungle, Inevitability of Death and Yawning or Snarling. Those 3 songs combined for a total of 1 playing over the same period.

Music @ Work is another album that has been more or less abandoned compared to its early tour appearances. It had 10 playings total during the last 12 shows; 8 for MMAW and 2 for Tiger the Lion. By comparison, M@W was represented with the playing of 8 different songs for a total of 24 songs in the first 12 shows of the tour.

Fully Completely had the most songs played over the past 12 shows with 37 slots total. Despite the increase in volume from the album, some songs were dropped completely from this last run. Eldorado, 50 Mission Cap and Pigeon Camera had all but disappeared with the increase coming with the saturation on the set lists with songs like Courage, 11/12; Wheat Kings, 7/12; and Fully Completely, 9/12.

We Are the Same continues to lead the way and is holding steady at just over 30% of all songs played. The weight of the playing has really shifted with the top 6 songs getting 72% of all plays. The top 7 songs account for 81% of all WATS plays, meaning Queen of the Furrows, Country Day, Speed River, The Exact Feeling and Honey Please have only been played 58 times between them.

Top Ten Longest No-Shows:

These songs have all been played this tour, but not in a while...

9. Goodnight Josephine: 26 shows (May 15)
9. Something On: 26 shows (May 15)
8. Emperor Penguin: 27 shows (May 14)
7. Are We Family: 28 shows (May 12)
6. Greasy Jungle: 29 shows (May 11)
5. Long Time Running: 31 shows (May 8)
4. The Completists: 32 shows (May 7)
3. World Container: 36 shows (Apr 29)
2. As Makeshift As We Are: 38 shows (Apr 27)
1. Stay: 39 shows (Apr 24)

Thanks for reading. Be good out there.

Notes: Both Frozen In My Tracks and Springtime In Vienna have been on really solid runs lately. I guess the band just gets to a point where certain song start to really get them off. If they're having fun, we'll be having fun. I think this is the first time we've seen Yer Not the Ocean in the encore slot this tour. A nice touch. The first set was pretty standard. The surprises are coming farther and farther apart and the "Bag of Songs" is getting smaller.

What Is Up?

Pin It Now!

Hey Hipheads!

Well the boys have crossed the country coast-to-coast over the last week and a bit, from Victoria, BC to St. John's, NL where they are playing tonight. I am preparing Vol. 3 of the Tragically Hip Tour Stat Pack and will post it on Sunday so it includes everything through the July 4th Halifax, NS show.

The Hip will have almost 3 weeks off after Halifax until their July 23rd show at Harris Park in London, ON. The London show begins an 8 show mini leg that will take them into the US, up to northern Ontario and across to Saskatchewan, Alberta & BC. Not all of these shows will be 2 sets as some are a part of a festival. The Highland Bowl in Rochester is a beautiful little venue if you want to see this band in America, outdoors without Canada's stupid "Beer Garden" rules.

I will be adding content even without the shows going on. I will add a few stories of trips past, and some other tidbit you may or may not find interesting. In the meantime, I just got back from a two show Phish run down south. You can check out my trip report over at mrjackstrawSays...Part I | Part II
