'The Hip Covers Project' is a gathering of many different versions by many different people of Tragically Hip songs. Old or new. Fast or slow. Solo or ensemble. Plugged in or unplugged. The goals of this project include providing entertainment and inspiration for our readers, and giving exposure to the artists.
I am always searching out new and interesting versions of songs. I like when a song can be completely different than its original version. I don't care if it's something you saw or it's you and your band. I don't care if it's professionally shot or done by you in your bedroom. Whatever. If you have any suggestions for this project please send them to mrjackstraw@gmail.com
We're going to start off with Justin Rutledge covering The Hip's Nautical Disaster off of their 'Day For Night' album...
I am planning to add a new video at least once a week. Maybe more. I will be hosting them on the website here and blasting them out via the HipTour Facebook Page & Twitter @hiptour, so be sure to follow along however you choose.
When making suggestions or possibly deciding on a cover, remember that there are a few songs like Wheat Kings, Fiddler's Green, Bobcaygeon, ABAC & boots Or Hearts that have been covered by everybody and their brother and it's going to take a pretty special or unique version to get one of those posted. I'd be more inclined to share someone trying an acoustic 'Tiger The Lion' or something random like that.

Word on the street is that The Tragically Hip will be a part of the July 13th concert line-up at the Exploits Valley Salmon Festival that also includes The Eagles as the head-liners. It will be a rare billing slot for Canada's favourite rock & roll band on their home turf, acting as an opener, and I'm sure they will give The Eagles a run for their money. The festival is located in Grand Falls.
The festival website is currently under construction and I don't have any ticket info for you at this time. When I get more confirmed details, I will pass them on. Until then, stockpile your Screech.
The Details
Tickets for the Salmon Festival Concert will go on sale Friday, April 26 and will be available to purchase by phone, online, and at Needs convenience stores across the province. A limited number of early bird tickets will be available for the price of $119.75 and after that tickets will cost $134.75.
There will also be a VIP section available with some minor changes from last year. This year, only concertgoers 19 and older will be permitted in the VIP section. VIP tickets are limited, and cost $221. All ticket prices are before taxes and surcharges. Booking information for campsites will come at a later date.
“We consider the price for this level of entertainment to be a bargain price really,” said Hawkins. “We believe we’ve done a great job in getting the level of entertainment we’re getting for the price.”
Hawkins said he expects the early bird and VIP tickets to sell fast, and suggested people get their tickets as soon as possible after they go on sale.
And now a word from our sponsor: Sarcasm >>>>
Thank gawd there's going to be a VIP section... I don't know how you could ever run a quality music festival without separating the herd? Can you believe in the olden days VIP fans and the regular fans actually had to co-mingle? It's true.
Oh, and enjoy this one...

You were streets ahead I couldn't sleep a wink Staring in the dark By the light of your skin At myself sitting On a suitcase Or as the sleeping youth In the upset sleigh They don't wait they won't wait They run with the weather They don't wait Listen you can hear The sound of the sleigh The panting of the team Of all runners away And all the gentle work Of the traces Their jingle-jangle jerk Destroying all space They won't wait they don't wait They run with the weather They don't wait They don't wait they won't wait Just stay together They don't wait Wait. Wait! Wait! Wait. Please, just stay together They don't wait they won't wait They run with the weather They don't wait They don't wait they won't wait Just stay together They don't wait Wait. Wait! Gently breathing lit by the morning sun Through the night it'd been raining venom I want to be kind not a bullet in the right place Or just of two minds more important than importance I want to help you lift enormous things A pinch a sting I don't feel a thing But as the earth revolved around the sun All those shadows waiting round the last lights To the dream of being here comes the night All of the tiptoeing past all our most-feared buildings I only say this now because I didn't when it was happening I want to help you lift enormous things A pinch a sting I don't feel a thing But as the earth revolves around the Sun I can see it all at once And O what a glittering chance In my head the game goes quiet And I can see it all at once Them yelling 'Yer not the goods! - A kid before the rapids!' But in my head the game is quiet And O what a glittering chance O what a glittering chance O what a glittering chance At transformation At transformation That's my dream of being That's my dream of being That's my dream of being That's my dream of being

Notes:Country Day has only been played 7 times live. I love this song. I think it had awesome potential as a live concert vehicle. It baffles me that they never ran this one out more. Baffles.
Country day a day in the unknown A gentle breeze gently blowin' country day Country day another day in the unknown I can feel it in my bones country day We're Mr and Mrs Smoke and things are finally clickin' Still having trouble with the things that aren't meaningful But yea really clickin' Our dreams are where we're at what we can see and touch With work we understand we don't want for much Country day a day in the unknown A gentle breeze gently blowin country day Country day another day in the unknown I can feel it in my bones country day You infiltrate my life you resonate with meaning I wrote I love you on a rock one night And threw it never dreaming Now our dreams are where we're at what we can feel and touch it's work we understand we don't want for much Country day a day in the unknown A gentle breeze gently blows country day Country day another day in the unknown I can feel it deep in my bones country day And that rock it missed your head Though it didn't miss by much I remember what you said No I mean it I am touched And somehow it is enough So God keep our Land cuz we certainly can't Until the darkness ends until the sun tries again Our dreams are where we're at what we can smell and touch Work we understand we don't want too much Country day a day in the unknown Where they been where we're goin' country day Country day another day in the unknown Gently drawing to a close country day

Notes: The first single released from 'We Are The Same'. It was a setlist throughout the 2009 'WATS Tour' and continues to be. It's a very unique song and I'm sure it has its fans as well as its detractors. Me? I'm fine if I hear it and I'm fine if I don't.
I've been interpreted and shrunk I've been as touch-less as a drunk This is as bad as or worse as bad as or worse This is as bad as or worse as bad as or worse Love is a curse (That he who would own it deserves) Love is a curse (You get what you give not deserve) I know I know this is all just first blurts that he who would try to own it deserves it And I know it's got nothing to do with ‘deserves it' It's just that you don't just blurt, Love is a curse Love is a curse Love is a curse You don't just blurt, Love is a curse Though I've been too weak to escape And I don't have the strength to pluck a grape Though it's as bad as worse as bad as or worse Though it's as bad as or worse as bad as or worse Love is a first (I've felt the dull fangs of the truth) Love is a first (I've heard the music they torture to) Love is a first (I saw Old Power enforced) Love is a first (I was more the Devil Of Darkness' horse) I drank the poison from the source And smoked that murder fell on the floor And watched the near-death of your TV And dreamed its darkly nurtured dreams And drained my ocean of its worth Like God's representatives on earth Learned how to hurt and how not to hurt The thing you taught me what I learned? Love is a first Though it's as bad as or worse as bad as or worse As bad as or worse as bad as or worse Love is a curse (That he who would own it deserves) Love is a first (Though it occurs and occurs) Love is a curse (You get what you give not deserve) Love is a first (Love just occurs and occurs)

Sometimes, when I'm walking I dream I'm being taken for granted It's then that I clearly imagine The Day That You Take Me For Granted You said, One day you're gonna realize You really have no sense of yourself And with no way to take it back You'll be frozen in your tracks Frozen in your tracks Sometimes, when we're talking I feel like yer not even listening It's then that I clearly remember Rarely ever seeing you listening You said, When you gonna realize You really have no sense of yourself? There's no way to take it back You'll be frozen in your tracks Yer simpler than the rest you don't do stupid games Yer not more complex you don't lay ‘violent blame' Tonight, I was walking Feeling alone on the planet When all at once something stopped me I realized I'd taken you for granted And tonight I realized I really have no sense of myself No way to take it back I am frozen in my tracks I'm frozen in my tracks Frozen in my tracks

Notes: The live performance lifespan of Speed River lasted just over a month during which time it was played 11 times in total. Curious since Wikipedia notes it as being a 'released single' from the album 'We Are The Same'. If there was ever going to be a bust-out of this song, I suspect it would have happened at the 2013/02/08 Guelph, ON show since that's the first time The Hip have played Guelph (where Speed River is) since the album's release. If they weren't going to bust it out for the Guelphites (I looked that up), it's probably not going to be heard from again.
You're visually Stunning, I'm almost shivering You'd become Anyone, don't hate who you have to be Speed River take me away Speed River take me away Speed River take me away Hard stuff Gimme a dose of the hard stuff Ok. Enough! Ok, enough of the hard stuff Speed River take me away Speed River take me away Speed River take me away Away from this, away from this Awake enough This feels like I've been here before You said, Don't be tough, lets go back I said, Let's go forward Speed River take me away Speed River took ya away Speed River took her away Away from this, away this minute This house Sounds just like a bomb hit it It's an old sound That says, if you asked me to, I'd relive it Speed River take me away Speed River take me away Speed River take me away Away from this away this minute away for one moment away from this feeling From Feeling this away Away from this moment away from this feeling from feeling this away Away from this...

Notes: Played just 22 times on the 2009 'WATS Tour', but for some reason made the setlist 3 nights in a row all at the same venue no less! Artpark in Lewiston, NY... Meaning that it has been played more times in Lewiston, NY than in Toronto. Of course that means nothing. I'm not big on ranking songs, but for my money Queen Of The Furrows is a top 3 song on this album along with The Depression Suite and Country Day.
Win Toronto! yelled the Queen of the Furrows This is how we farm hens cluck and roosters crow You are my heart, staring down from the bureau To be apart? Is that why you have to go? To Conversation City everybody's talkin You must have something to say Conversation City making conversation Working at it night and day Watch yerself! I say to my Toasted Western This is how I feel and it's when I learn the most You are my heart yer my Queen of the Furrows This is how I feel hens cluck and roosters crow I'm in the night fields everything dark yellow I'm making my way by feel by my neighbours glow You are my heart oh my Queen of the Furrows This is how I farm eyes up and ears down low You are my heart you're my Queen of the Furrows This is how I feel hens cluck and roosters crow This is how I feel...
But in Conversation City everybody's talkin' You must have something to say Conversation City making conversation Working at it night and day You are my heart oh my Queen of the Furrows This is how I farm eyes up and ears down low You are my heart you're my Queen of the Furrows This is how I feel hens cluck and roosters crow You are my heart this is how I feel You are my heart this is how I feel You are my heart this how I feel This is how I feel This is how I feel This is how I feel

The exact feeling is coming back around The tiger's wheeling And covering some ground I'm up to my torch, I'm up to my tits Maybe I got no more innarest In the exact feeling Is all I ever tried to do The perimeter, the ceiling Just to dribble somewhere new I'd be on my hands, I'd be on my knees Saying, Hey! Bartender! One more of these For the exact feeling The exact feeling Maybe isn't what I think Not the singularity Of a thousand million dreams Not a prosperity that means I never have to say a thing Maybe the exact feeling Is on the other side of this feeling I remember stealing - huh - lying begging loneliness Flying falling kneeling, trying to get em to notice I'm not being sad, not being dear I only wanna stay with you right here In this exact feeling In your exact feeling In this exact feeling In your exact feeling

Notes: I've long considered Little Bones to be The Tragically Hip's anthem. It just always seemed to capture their essence in every way. It's a hit that's not a hit. It plays as well in a stadium as it does a bar-room. If somebody who had never heard the band were to ask you what they were all about, you could play Little Bones and it would convey most of what you'd being trying to pass along. If Little Bones is The Hip's anthem, The Depression Suite is definitely their opus. Their Terrapin Station if-you-will. These 2 songs are so different yet so Hip to the core. I had been waiting a long time for The Hip to construct something like The Depression Suite. If the lack of a keyboardist is the reason it hasn't (along with some others) been played since the 2009 'WATS Tour' then it's time for the band to pay up for someone to fill that seat permanently. It would be a crying fucking shame if this song were never played live again... whatever the reason.
The Depression Suite The Rock
Under the pillow
I bury my head and try and shut Chicago out
As it turns out there's a whole other world of sounds
of perfect fifths low skids and Arctic howls
all saying are you going through something?
are you going through something?
Under the pillow a little room to breathe
the early morning light's a pale cranberry
I hear the Aaa-aah-aah not now-wow-wow
of a siren faraway and closing steadily
saying Are you going through something?
Are you going through something?
cuz I - I - I - I I am too
Under the pillow
I can hear you whisperin' are you going through something?
well honey are you going through something?
Are you going through something?
Then I - I - I - I I am too
Then I - I - I - I I am too
Then I - I - I - I
I am too
New Orleans World
Gimme gimme gimme gimme-gimme
Gimme an opportunity gimme-gimme
Put me put me put me put me-put me
In the saddle I'll ride you'll see
There's new work in the Day Room
I can't lounge on-line
Don't you laugh
I'd sell a giraffe and I'd give you half
Just to occupy my mind
I'll be driven my eyes always moving
I'll be riveted to the task yea
No smiling! That's important
I will make my face a mask
And I'm thinking just in passing
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing
Working in the new NewOrleansWorld
I'm emptying slots working like a ghost
I move through huge rooms with no windows
And no Gulf of Mexico
Gimmegimmegimme gimme-gimme
Gimme an opportunity gimme-gimme
Put me put me put me put me-put me
In the saddle please
I'll be driven my eyes always moving
I'll be riveted to the task yea
No smiling! That's so important
I will make my face a mask
And I'm thinking just in passing
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing
What if this song does nothing
Don't You Wanna See How It Ends?
Bring on the requisite strangeness
It always has to get a little weird a little weird
Yea you just bring on the requisite strangeness
Bring it on then disappear disappear
Go to be a man of the boom
To Florida without the ocean
But
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
When the door is just starting to open?
When Athabasca depends?
Don't you wanna see how it ends
I can hear you
But I can't stay here
You left me lost in the Barrens
You left me born on the stairs
It's minus 11
Inside my kettle
I didn't come to get lost in the Barrens
I didn't come to settle
To be a man on the moon
To get my little slice of heaven
Yeah
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
When the door is just starting to open?
And Athabasca depends
Doncha wanna see how it ends
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
The door is just starting to open.
Athabasca depends.
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
Yeah
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
I'm holding the door to the Barrens
And Athabasca depends
Doncha wanna see how it ends?

We rode hard for the boat hard as we could No tears you said understood? Understood!? I said, 'Awright' 'A crowd will be born' 'Only born die' I'm not one to watch for a sign in the night Or to watch 'a bomb go off in a young girls life' Who are you? The Last Recluse? Who are you? The Last Canada Goose? Who are you? What is it with you? Who are you? Who are you? When the wind comes up and the surface of the water scuffs - Enough! Enough! - the ferry whistle cried Just ride you said Ride and shut up I jumped on board turned around to wave goodbye You were already on your bike and riding with my bike by your side Who are you? The Black Canoe? Who are you? The Last Of The Immune? Who are you? You rode out of view As far as I knew it was you Who broke my heart from the start Made me work and work so hard To get where I am To where I'd let you do it all again Who are you? Who are you? What do I do? Without you? Who are you? The Last Recluse? Who are you? The Last Of The Immune? Are you the Last Canoe? The Last Canada Goose? Who are you? Who are you? Who are you? Who are you?

I don't wanna look for words I don't wanna work that hard I want your song in my head The way you sing it from the heart yeah Whenever I get lost Whenever I feel weak Whenever or just because You whisper it to me Honey maybe everything you need Is on the other side of this feeling Honey please
But when I 'look for words' For more going concerns For the 'adventure of ideas' 'Adventure never returns' yeah Whenever I get stuck Whenever I can't speak Whenever just because You do it in your sleep Honey maybe everything you need Is on the other side of this feeling Honey please When all 'the poetry of the earth' Might be all there is It might still have some worth Yeah but I can't dance to it Honey everything we need Is on the other side of this feeling this feeling Honey right here underneath our feet Under all the stars of the County Everything we need Honey please Under all the stars of the County with you tonight Under all the stars of the County with you by my side Under all the stars of the County shining bright Under all the stars of the County with you tonight

The Reactor's down I guess for Labour Day Today's the first day I ain't seen the great plume of steam From across the Lake From across the Lake Hey that's a morning moon I'm not making strange You said someone's paying When something's too cheap somebody's paying something You said someone's paying something Under a morning moon Say those little things that don't make anyone feel better It didn't take too much to upset her Nothing that could clear a room Just say one little thing that could make me feel better Under this morning moon The Sun's a light bulb and the Moon is a mirror There are times when you can see both the bulb and the mirror See the Bulb in the Mirror And that's a Morning Moon Say those little things that don't make anyone feel better It doesn't take too much to upset her It was nothing that could clear a room Just saying one little thing trying to make you feel better Under this morning moon Under this morning moon Trying to make you feel better Nothing too far from the truth

Notes: Disclaimer -> It's songs like this that make The Hip so great... to me anyway. This song is a top 5 for me. It's the lyrics... the cadence... it's addictive. It was played extensively on the 'World Container Tour' then once in 2008 and once in 2009 at the very beginning of the 'WATS Tour'.
There's a world container with your name on it and a billion ways to go berserk when the country quits on you it must be dinner and the Himmler on this one is, there's no dessert (he's the one who couldn't imagine all the people living life in peace, yoo hoo oo oo oo) Good news! You get to vanish go to Cleveland, be an indie smash the good news is now you're smaller the bad news is you can be smaller than that Go suck some souls, be a reader, get used laugh at a funeral or two laugh and laugh til all the chameleons turn black laugh and laugh til you're told, 'Please don't come back' then fake incredulous, say, 'I just can't believe! How'd it get this late so early?' say, 'Ain't life a grand' and 'I'm in awe of y'all' then drop into your haunted bunk go to your touchless times out where the water's drying go past the 'No Attractions Past This Point' sign what you'll find there are all flaws in progress where all songs are one song and that song is, Don't Forget yea, all songs are one song and that song is, Don't Forget Yea, I've faked incredulous, said, 'I just can't believe. How'd it get this late so early' said, 'Ain't life a grand' and 'I'm in awe of y'all' I've dropped into my haunted bunk been to the touchless times, out where the water's drying been past the 'No Attractions Past This Point' sign what we have here are all flaws in progress where all songs are one song and that song is, Don't Forget where all songs are one song and that song is, Don't Forget where all songs are one song and that song is, Don't Forget

Notes:Family Band was a mainstay in Tragically Hip setlists from its debut in 2006 right up through the 2009 'WATS Tour'. It was dropped from the 'Festival Setlists' of 2011/12 although it's the type of song that fits in well with that ilk. It became somewhat of a rarity on the 'Now For Plan A Tour' which is too bad. It can fill in for any of the heavy-hitters that are continuously overplayed. It can open a set, close a set, appear in the middle to kick-start the show after a slow down or be an encore song.
I can't smell a rat when it's all rat I can't find one in an elevator My mind doesn't work so bad But I am a poor exterminator that's right I can't destroy entirely Or annihilate a little later I can't see the entire city But I'm not a bad exterminator I'm just a shade shy of true wickedness I'm a shade shy of truly loving it, yea There are other things I'd rather be doing Even nothing Even nothing Even nothing with you One day I'll make some honest rock n roll Full of handclaps and gang vocals I'm gonna get all the children involved We're gonna get lost on all you locals We'll be a shade shy of true wickedness We'll be a shade shy of truly loving this, yea There are other things we'll rather be doing, sure Even nothing Even nothing Even nothing with you We'll load out through the snow Through small groups of people smoking Hey! Get that kick drum loaded! Into the back seat folded down! We'll go virtually unnoticed What's gripping the city ain't hitting the town We'll be a shade shy of true wickedness We'll be a shade shy of truly loving it, yea There are other things that we'll surely miss We'll load out through the snow Through small groups of people smoking Hey! get that kick drum loaded! Into the back seat folded down! We'll go perfectly unnoticed What's gripping the city ain't hitting the town

Canadian country-folk legend Stompin' Tom Connors, whose toe-tapping musical spirit and fierce patriotism established him as one of Canada's strongest cultural icons, has died. He was 77.
Connors passed away Wednesday from what a spokesman described as "natural causes."
Brian Edwards said the musician, rarely seen without his signature black cowboy hat and stomping cowboy boots, knew his health was declining and had penned a message for his fans a few days before his death.
In the message posted on his website, Connors says Canada kept him "inspired with its beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world."
On Twitter, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said "we have lost a true Canadian original. R.I.P. Stompin' Tom Connors. You played the best game that could be played."
The National Hockey League tweeted "Sad to hear that legendary Canadian Stompin' Tom Connors has passed. His legacy lives on in arenas every time The Hockey Song is played."
Connors is survived by his wife Lena, two sons, two daughters and several grandchildren.
Dubbed Stompin' Tom for his propensity to pound the floor with his left foot during performances, Connors garnered a devoted following through straight-ahead country-folk tunes that drew inspiration from his extensive travels and focused on the everyman.
Although wide commercial appeal escaped Connors for much of his four-decade career, his heritage-soaked songs like Canada Day, Up Canada Way, The Hockey Song, Bud the Spud, and Sudbury Saturday Night, have come to be regarded as veritable national anthems thanks to their unabashed embrace of all things Canadiana.
Still, Connors often complained that not enough songs were being written about his homeland.
"I don't know why I seem to be the only one, or almost the only one, writing about this country," Connors said in a rare one-on-one interview at his home in Halton Hills, Ont., in 2008.
"It just amazes me that I've been going so long I would think that somebody else (would have) picked up the torch a long time ago and started writing tons of songs about this country. This country is the most underwritten country in the world as far as songs are concerned. We starve. The people in this country are starving for songs about their homeland."
Fervent patriot
Connor's fervent patriotism brought controversy when his principles put him at loggerheads with the Canadian music industry.
In 1978, he famously returned a handful of Juno Awards he had amassed in previous years, complaining that some artists were being awarded in categories outside their genre while other winners had conducted most of their work outside of the country. He derided artists that moved to the United States as "border jumpers."
"I feel that the Junos should be for people who are living in Canada, whose main base of business operations is in Canada, who are working toward the recognition of Canadian talent in this country and who are trying to further the export of such talent from this country to the world with a view to proudly showing off what this country can contribute to the world market," he said in a statement at the time.
The declaration marked the beginning of a 10-year self-imposed exile from the spotlight.
From Connors' earliest days, life was a battle.
He was born in Saint John, N.B., on Feb. 9, 1936 to an unwed teenage mother. According to his autobiography, Before the Fame, he often lived hand-to-mouth as a youngster, hitch-hiking with his mother from the age of three, begging on the street by the age of four. At age eight, he was placed in the care of Children's Aid and adopted a year later by a family in Skinner's Pond, P.E.I. He ran away four years later to hitch-hike across the country.
Connors bought his first guitar at age 14 and picked up odd jobs as he wandered from town to town, at times working on fishing boats, as a grave digger, tobacco picker and fry cook.
Humble beginnings
Legend has it that Connors began his musical career when he found himself a nickel short of a beer at the Maple Leaf Hotel in Timmins, Ont., in 1964 at age 28.
The bartender agreed to give him a drink if he would play a few songs but that turned into a 14-month contract to play at the hotel. Three years later, Connors made his first album and garnered his first hit in 1970 with Bud The Spud.
Hundreds more songs followed, many based on actual events, people, and towns he had visited.
"I'm a man of the land, I go out into the country and I talk to people and I know the jobs they do and how they feel about their jobs," Connors has said.
"And I've been doing that all my life so I know Canada like the palm of my hand. I don't need a map to go anywhere in Canada, I know it all."
In 1988, Connors emerged from his decade-long protest with the album Fiddle and Song, featuring a new fiddle style and the songs Canada Day, Up Canada Way, Lady kd lang, and I Am the Wind. It was followed in 1990 by a 70-city Canadian tour that established him as one of the country's best loved troubadours.
But his strong convictions about the music industry remained. Connors declined induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993.
Accolades he did embrace included an appointment to the Order of Canada in 1996, and his own postage stamp.
"Whatever I do, in my writing, I do it for others," Connors said in the 2008 interview. "I do it for my country and I do it for my countrymen and that's the only value that I really have. If there was no money in this, I'd be doing it anyway. I've always been that way. Because it's what I am."

When the summer is young and nobody has their prices No one is no one and nobody in a crisis There's no swimming past the drop-off or feeling sorry for yourself Ya don't go swimming past the drop-off or else Yer a pistol, yer a gun and suddenly I have no prices I'm like a friend of Dylan's our shovels meeting in some crisis But there's no swimming past the drop-off Yea we don't replace ourselves Ya don't go swimming past the drop-off or else The fates are amok and spun, measured and cut and the past is meant to please us Yer a comet from earth in a Kiss Alive shirt saying, 'holy fuck, it's Jesus!?' The surface is green and the dark interweaves in a lonely iridescence It's terribly deep and the cold is complete and it only lacks a presence and nothing else. When the summer is done and nobody sympathizes Yer no friend of Dylan's Yea, you won't see another crisis There's no swimming past the drop-off or feeling sorry for ourselves Ya don't go swimming past the drop-off or else Personal stakes will get raised and get raised til your story gets compelling If you lacked the sense or were willfully dense is forever in the telling The surface is green and the dark interweaves in a lonely iridescence It's terribly deep and the cold is complete and it only lacks your presence and nothing else nothing else nothing else and no one else

You kissed my fingers and made me love you Last night when we went to hell When the blood-starred curtain fell Men were turning on their machines, making everything mean Fires burned, cold values clashed Good and evil were all dry grass No child-ghost, no singing bird, no last laugh, no last word oh Last night I dreamed, last night I dreamed darkly nurtured dreams None of them were quite as frightening oh Canada emptied, there was me, featureless and freezing Last night I dreamed you didn't love me you kissed my fingers and made me love you Last night you left me derelict and disappeared for ages You just said 'honey save those tears of yours for the show, oh Last night I dreamed, last night I dreamed darkly nurtured dreams none of them were half as frightening oh Canada emptied there was me, beside you, featureless and freezing Last night I dreamed you didn't love me. You didn't love me. What's happening to you? Why don't you love me like you used to? When you kissed my fingers and you made me love you When you kissed my fingers and you made me love you Last night I dreamed, last night I dreamed darkly nurtured dreams None of them, none as frightening, oh Awake empty and out of sleep, you were beside me gently breathing Last night I dreamed you didn't love me You didn't love me You didn't love me Why don't you love me like you used to? When you kissed my fingers and you made me love you When you kissed my fingers and you made me love you

Notes: Sad song, but here's something that makes me smile... My wife is from California and needless to say she hadn't heard of The Hip before we met. Now that she has, not really a fan. Anyway, she goes back to Cali for a family visit and learns how to play this song by ear on the piano after I snuck it on to her ipod... Always makes me smile that does. Two other songs along with Pretend share a variation of the lyric "Gripping the city, hitting the town"... The Kids Don't Get It & Family Band...
If I ask you a question are you going to lie to me? Is that your question? Because that one is easy It's gripping the city and hitting the town and no one on earth is doing this now If you can pretend and I can pretend pretending won't end and then and well then... If you take the chances I'll take the bows saying ‘no one on earth is doing this now' But if I ask you a question are you gonna lie to me? Is that your question? Because that one is easy If you don't pretend and I don't pretend pretending might end but pretend can pretend to end You can't pretend Yes I can. Yes I can. Yes I can. You can't pretend Yes I can. Yes I can. Yes I can. You can't pretend Yes I can. Yes I can. Yes I can. You can't pretend Yes I can. Yes I can. Yes I can.
