Daredevil - Justin Rutledge

Pin It Now!

A tribute album to The Hip entitled "Daredevil" will be released by Justin Rutledge on April 22, 2014.

You may remember Justin from our 'Hip Covers Project' series. He was the first artist that we used/profiled for his outstanding version of Nautical Disaster. Curiously that song is not on the tracklist (below).

Other musicians helping Justin on this album include Mary Margaret O'Hara, Andy Maize (Skydiggers), Jenn Grant, Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene) as well as his own backing band.

For those of who follow along on a regular basis, you know that I enjoy takes on The Hip's tunes that don't necessarily mimic the original. I mean, what's the point? That's already been done. I think this album is going to offer some very unique takes judging by Courage.... Have a listen and let me know what you think...

Daredevil:

1. Looking For A Place to Happen
2. Springtime In Vienna
3. Thugs
4. Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man
5. Grace, Too
6. Locked In The Trunk Of A Car
7. Courage (For Hugh Maclennan)
8. Long Time Running
9. Put It Off
10. Fiddler's Green

I know I have already done a version of 'Bobcaygeon' for this series, but this version is far enough away from the original and way far enough away from the other cover version I posted.

I was not able to get too much info on this dude. In fact, I don't really have any... just this clip...

After a week off we are back with the 10th installment of our series of Tragically Hip Covers. The last 2 performances have featured soloists and this time we are back to an ensemble.

The Temps are a cover band out of Victoris, BC. Their home base seems to be the Irish Times Pub so if you like what you hear that's where you should head provided that you are in or have access to the city of Victoria.

The song itself is a pretty straightforward version. Nothing to crazy like some of the other covers that been featured. The singer has a nice voice and does add some of his own flair to the song which I think works well. I kinda wish Gord would go back to proper cadence when he sings most songs... especially if he's insistent on screaming as opposed to singing some of the older tunes. Anyway, it's nice to hear this song being sung for whatever that's worth.

I've included the band's contact info below the video. They have more videos up on YouTube so there may be some other cover songs that might interest you. As always, there's links to all of the past featured performances in 'The Hip Covers Project' and if you haven't seen them yet there's some good ones. Some are quite different than The Hip's original version. The 'Locked In The Trunk Of A Car' is still the acme for me, but who knows? Got a suggestion for a featured cover? Let me know. Want to do one yourself? Even better.

Here's the 9th instalment of 'The Hip Covers Project' and it features Jake Keilhauer performing 'Stay'.

The video features Jake on different instruments, sitting in different positions so it's obviously been edited. He has a lot of other videos up on YouTube on his channel under the name 'jakedoesmusic'.

Again, another interesting take on a Tragically Hip song... Enjoy!

This is the 8th installment of 'The Hip Covers Project', where once a week (usually Friday's if I have it together) I try to bring you a bit of a different take on others interpreting the music of The Tragically Hip. And as I've said before, it's my goal to try to present something that is a bit askew from what you might get from The Hip themselves.

Be sure to check out all of the videos from past weeks (listed below). Especially last week's: Parlor Trixx. I got that posted at a weird time and it didn't reach a lot of you as these normally do. It's a head-banging, hair metal version of Little Bones.

This week we have Kasey Kohring with his busker version of New Orleans Is Sinking. It's very good. You can check out his website below. Hopefully he's not being pimped out too much by the adults in his life... I guess time will tell on that one. Anyway, for now it is what it is and hopefully he still gets to be a kid and not 'work' every weekend. It looks like if you live in the area just north of Toronto you have a good shot at seeing him. His other covers mainly fall into the classic rock genre...

If you dig it, help get this kid some exposure by sharing on Facebook, Twitter or our new favorite social media avenue: Google+.

The Hip Covers Project: Parlor Trixx - Little Bones

Pin It Now!

The last installment of 'The Hip Covers Project' featured one guy and a piano which I think is a great segue into a head-banging hair metal version of Little Bones.

The band on stage is called Parlor Trixx and they are out of Regina, SK. It looks from their website that they are still active. Anyway, this ties in nicely as well with the fact that The Hip are all over Saskatchewan this summer with 3 shows in the province and one practically on the border.

If there's a song that's ready made for this type of treatment it's Little Bones. I think On The Verge could step right into this type of arena too. Of course what would be really interesting would be to see someone try this style with a song like Greasy Jungle or Something On

So here's Parlor Trixx doing Little Bones. The crowd is great. Be sure to watch this through till the end. They really finish strong complete with a tandem head-bang sequence.

I usually do these on Fridays but it didn't work out last week so we'll use 'The Hip Covers Project' as a Monday bump...

I had always had it in mind to present this particular performance. I am a huge fan of this song. I think it's one of The Hip's most awesome weapons in its live arsenal. I like them long. I like them to build. And I like them to explode.

Of course one of the traits of a good song is that is can be reinterpreted and still be effective. The version below is completely unlike The Hip's. It's moodier. And this is a moody song. It's a serious song.

This performance by Chris Koster took place at the 'Holiday Jam In Support Of The Sick Kids Foundation' on December 14, 2009 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, ON.

Thanks to Jeff for pushing this one. Check out his YouTube vids at Concertaholics.

The Hip Covers Project: Jon Alexander - Scared

Pin It Now!

The 5th instalment in our 'Hip Covers Project' is a solo acoustic version of Scared performed by Jon Alexander. Now acoustic versions of certain Hip songs are a dime a dozen on YouTube but this one has a few elements that you may find interesting beyond say one guy and his guitar.

Portions of the guitar playing are played, recorded and looped and then played over to create much more texture than you'd expect from a solo operation. The same is done with background voices. Now Keller Williams is the master of this type of technique and for making a one man show sound like a whole band, but if you've never seen this style of playing this is a good jumping off point. The song isn't too crazy and there's not too many effects and adjustments being made.

This is a pretty solid version that generally sticks to the song structure as we know it. I'm still waiting for a fast or faster version of this song. Wouldn't the lyrics seem ominous played death metal style???

This reinterpretation of Bobcaygeon was done using 2 Nintendo Game Boys... enjoy.

OK, OK, OK....

Here's the 3rd instalment of The Hip Covers Project and this one doesn't come from somebody's basement. This is a production for sure. Now I'm not familiar with the Melanie Morgan Band or the show Cover Me Canada which looks like a reality/competition type of thing from CBC I believe.

Most of you have enjoyed the first two in this series and hopefully you'll enjoy this take too. Remember, I'm not looking for performances that replicate The Hip to a T. It doesn't even have to be completed in the same genre. This one will take up less than 2 minutes of your time and it will be presented to you be a female voice. The arrangements on this one haven't been changed much if at all.

Remember, this is all in fun. I'm not trying to find substitute performances for you to listen to FOREVER. I know a few of you get a little bent out of shape over these, but the shit ain't scripture. So take a breath and have a look....

Now this is what I'm talking about! A unique twist on an old favourite...

The second instalment of The Hip Covers Project introduces us to The Herbert Bail Orchestra based out of Los Angeles, CA. For the record this is not a SoCal nepotism thing just because I happen to find myself avoiding Canadian winters these days down here. I literally just happened upon them.

Check out their performance and let me know (and them) what you think. They bring some unusual instruments and a unique cadence to the song.

'The Hip Covers Project' is a gathering of many different versions by many different people of Tragically Hip songs. Old or new. Fast or slow. Solo or ensemble. Plugged in or unplugged. The goals of this project include providing entertainment and inspiration for our readers, and giving exposure to the artists.

I am always searching out new and interesting versions of songs. I like when a song can be completely different than its original version. I don't care if it's something you saw or it's you and your band. I don't care if it's professionally shot or done by you in your bedroom. Whatever. If you have any suggestions for this project please send them to mrjackstraw@gmail.com

We're going to start off with Justin Rutledge covering The Hip's Nautical Disaster off of their 'Day For Night' album...

I am planning to add a new video at least once a week. Maybe more. I will be hosting them on the website here and blasting them out via the HipTour Facebook Page & Twitter @hiptour, so be sure to follow along however you choose.

When making suggestions or possibly deciding on a cover, remember that there are a few songs like Wheat Kings, Fiddler's Green, Bobcaygeon, ABAC & boots Or Hearts that have been covered by everybody and their brother and it's going to take a pretty special or unique version to get one of those posted. I'd be more inclined to share someone trying an acoustic 'Tiger The Lion' or something random like that.
