New summer date added...

Canadian rock legends the Tragically Hip are coming to Cobourg.
The '50 Mission Cap' hit makers will touch down at the Cobourg Community Centre on June 20.
"We're very excited," said Stephen Peacock, Cobourg's chief administrative officer.
Planning to bring the Hip to Cobourg began "quite a few months ago," Mr. Peacock said.
"The enthusiasm of the people of Cobourg will be high for what will be an intimate setting for a band of this calibre," he said.
Tickets will go on sale on May 4 at 10 a.m. Fans can snap up tickets to see the Kingston-born group by lining up at the Cobourg Community Centre, on May 4 only, and online at www.ticketmaster.ca or by calling 855-985-5000.

The Hip Covers Project: Jon Alexander - Scared

Pin It Now!

The 5th instalment in our 'Hip Covers Project' is a solo acoustic version of Scared performed by Jon Alexander. Now acoustic versions of certain Hip songs are a dime a dozen on YouTube but this one has a few elements that you may find interesting beyond say one guy and his guitar.

Portions of the guitar playing are played, recorded and looped and then played over to create much more texture than you'd expect from a solo operation. The same is done with background voices. Now Keller Williams is the master of this type of technique and for making a one man show sound like a whole band, but if you've never seen this style of playing this is a good jumping off point. The song isn't too crazy and there's not too many effects and adjustments being made.

This is a pretty solid version that generally sticks to the song structure as we know it. I'm still waiting for a fast or faster version of this song. Wouldn't the lyrics seem ominous played death metal style???

2002/10/15: Hummingbird Centre - Toronto, ON

Pin It Now!

Here some live concert video of The Hip performing on what I believe to be the 2002/10/15 show from Toronto's Hummingbird Centre.

I was going to do some SetlistArt for this one but thehip.com doesn't list 'The Dire Wolf in it's database so I'm not 100% on the accuracy of their information. It appears at the show on the next night at the same venue the band does a double encore. I only mention this because the band has traditionally gone with the same format throughout a particular tour so it stands to reason that both shows should look the same save for the song titles.

This is a nice little treat for you 'In Violet Light' fans (like me) as there's some quality footage of a few songs that we don't hear live very much anymore.

Track listing:
1. Use It Up
2. A Beautiful Thing
3. Puttin' Down
4. It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken
5. Are You Ready
6. My Music At Work
7. Silver Jet
8. The Dire Wolf

The Hip Covers Project: Kevin Stebner - Bobcaygeon

You Hip purists will hate this one, but I'm not doing this for you.

This reinterpretation of Bobcaygeon was done using 2 Nintendo Game Boys... enjoy.

Now the guy in the video introduces himself as Kevin Stebner(??) at the beginning of the video but it appears to be uploaded by a LeeJay Dunphy. I don't know if this is someone different or an alias or what. Here's what I found on LeeJay Dunphy out of Calgary, AB...

RUSH: Hall Of Fame Induction

Pin It Now!

Rush, one of my favorite bands finally had their names called at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. To say that this was long, long overdue is a bit of an understatement and at this point who cares? What the long wait did do was to make the moment when it happened all the more epic. Others being inducted included Heart, Public Enemy, Randy Newman and Albert King.

The Tragically Hip 2006/05/27: Sasquatch Music Festival - George, WA

The Tragically Hip

2006/05/27

Well, I bumped into this recording on SoundCloud while I was messing about. I listened to it and now I'm sharing it with all of you. It's from the Sasquatch Music Festival back in 2006 and The Hip played on the Saturday about mid-way on the bill. Ben Harper headlined that night and The Flaming Lips (awesome live act) were on right before Ben. Anyway, right before The Hip came on stage a huge hail storm blew through and it actually forced Neko Case off the stage. It was up-in-the-air whether or not the show would continue. I did and what we have is this nice, crisp recording of The Hip's set...

Setlist: Grace Too*, The Lonely End Of The Rink, Nautical Disaster, The Drop-Off, Courage, Fly, Fully Completely, Poets

* thehip.com lists 'As Makeshift As We Are' as the opening track. This is incorrect.

This show was at the beginning of what I think was a fairly prolific period of live shows for The Hip. Setlist diversity during the summer of 2006 and into the fall was up there with the best it's ever been...

Enjoy!
