The Hip Covers Project: Jake Keilhauer - Stay

Pin It Now!

Here's the 9th instalment of 'The Hip Covers Project' and it features Jake Keilhauer performing 'Stay'.

The video features Jake on different instruments, sitting in different positions so it's obviously been edited. He has a lot of other videos up on YouTube on his channel under the name 'jakedoesmusic'.

Again, another interesting take on a Tragically Hip song... Enjoy!

The Tragically Hip To Play Aurora, IL on July 20, 2013

Pin It Now!

The Tragically Hip have added another show down south this summer, this time at RiverEdge Park in Aurora, IL on July 20, 2013.

It's not clear at this time whether they'll be performing alone or with other acts.

Aurora, IL is located approximately 40 miles/65 kms west of downtown Chicago. There seems to be an entire summer music concert series that happens here. More information and ticket information can be found at www.riveredgeaurora.com/ .

The venue is brand new... this is its first season. I grabbed this from the Chicago Sun-Times A&E blog:

The Chicago area's newest outdoor music venue, the Riveredge Park Music Garden, will open Jun 14-15 with the Blues on the Fox music festival in west suburban Aurora.
The venue will be anchored by the John C. Dunham performance pavilion that features flexible seating allowing up to 2,500 seats in front of the stage, general admission for 6,000-8,000, plus a rooftop deck that hosts 300 VIPs. Total capacity is around 10,000 for the inaugural season concert schedule that will, in part, include:
June 14 and 15 Blues on the Fox, featuring Dr. John, JJ Grey & Mofro, The Stone Foxes, Tommy Castro and The Painkillers, Robert Randolph and The Family Band
June 16 Amped Up Adventure Race
June 28 97Nine and American English
June 29 Loretta Lynn and Randy Travis
July 4 Bruce in the USA and Fox Valley Orchestra with post-concert Fireworks
July 13 Trace Adkins, Aaron Lewis, Drake White and Blackberry Smoke
August 9 Sing-a-long-a Grease Movie in the Park
August 16 Peter Frampton's Guitar Circus with Peter Frampton, Sonny Landreth and B.B. King
August 17 The Pink Floyd Experience
August 30 Get the Led Out - The American Led Zeppelin

The Hip Covers Project: Kasey Kohring - New Orleans Is Sinking

Pin It Now!

This is the 8th installment of 'The Hip Covers Project', where once a week (usually Friday's if I have it together) I try to bring you a bit of a different take on others interpreting the music of The Tragically Hip. And as I've said before, it's my goal to try to present something that is a bit askew from what you might get from The Hip themselves.

Be sure to check out all of the videos from past weeks (listed below). Especially last week's: Parlor Trixx. I got that posted at a weird time and it didn't reach a lot of you as these normally do. It's a head-banging, hair metal version of Little Bones.

This week we have Kasey Kohring with his busker version of New Orleans Is Sinking. It's very good. You can check out his website below. Hopefully he's not being pimped out too much by the adults in his life... I guess time will tell on that one. Anyway, for now it is what it is and hopefully he still gets to be a kid and not 'work' every weekend. It looks like if you live in the area just north of Toronto you have a good shot at seeing him. His other covers mainly fall into the classic rock genre...

If you dig it, help get this kid some exposure by sharing on Facebook, Twitter or our new favorite social media avenue: Google+.

The Hip Covers Project: Parlor Trixx - Little Bones

Pin It Now!

The last installment of 'The Hip Covers Project' featured one guy and a piano which I think is a great segue into a head-banging hair metal version of Little Bones.

The band on stage is called Parlor Trixx and they are out of Regina, SK. It looks from their website that they are still active. Anyway, this ties in nicely as well with the fact that The Hip are all over Saskatchewan this summer with 3 shows in the province and one practically on the border.

If there's a song that's ready made for this type of treatment it's Little Bones. I think On The Verge could step right into this type of arena too. Of course what would be really interesting would be to see someone try this style with a song like Greasy Jungle or Something On

So here's Parlor Trixx doing Little Bones. The crowd is great. Be sure to watch this through till the end. They really finish strong complete with a tandem head-bang sequence.

I usually do these on Fridays but it didn't work out last week so we'll use 'The Hip Covers Project' as a Monday bump...

I had always had it in mind to present this particular performance. I am a huge fan of this song. I think it's one of The Hip's most awesome weapons in its live arsenal. I like them long. I like them to build. And I like them to explode.

Of course one of the traits of a good song is that is can be reinterpreted and still be effective. The version below is completely unlike The Hip's. It's moodier. And this is a moody song. It's a serious song.

This performance by Chris Koster took place at the 'Holiday Jam In Support Of The Sick Kids Foundation' on December 14, 2009 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, ON.

Thanks to Jeff for pushing this one. Check out his YouTube vids at Concertaholics.

Don't forget that I always welcome suggestion for this series. I know there's stuff out there I haven't seen. And if you're in a band or whatever, why not do something for this?
