Tragically Hip on Rockband

Pin It Now!

Kingston-based rock band The Tragically Hip sent out a tweet today to announce some exciting news to their fans:

“Now available for Rockband – Blow at High Dough” with a link to their Facebook post.

“Blow at High Dough” was the first single by The Tragically Hip from their premiere full-length album “Up to Here”, released in 1989. Many Canadians may also recognize it as the opening theme song for the CBC Television satirical TV comedy ‘Made in Canada’, which aired from 1998-2003 and starred comedian Rick Mercer.

Listen to a sample of the song – and XBox360 owners of Rock Band can order & download to play – at the Rock Band website.

Summer Tour

Pin It Now!

I love this time of year. It's the time of year I dream about throughout the winter season. Summer tours, festivals and outdoor shows. Last year at this time I already had 4 Hip shows under my belt and was just about to head down to Pittsburgh & Indianapolis to catch my first shows from Phish 3.0.

As it is this year, a few things have been lined up with more that will likely fall into place as we go along. My first Big show is next weekend on June 12th. I am heading down to Cuyahuga Falls, OH to with my sister & our significant others to see Phish. My sister & I have been on that crazy ride many times before, but the others are virgins and I'm sure this will be an eye-opener to say the least. You would have a hard time convincing me there's a better live act, period. No 2 shows are ever the same.

June 25th is a boys road trip to Rochester, NY for the first show of Furthur's Summer Tour. Dancing with the Deadheads is always a blast and the venue, The Highland Bowl, is perfect for this scene. I swear the trees were breathing last time I was there. They are playing at Artpark too if anyone's interested. Never a bad time:) Great musicianship from living legends.

I'm on the fence about going to Ottawa for the Bluesfest. If I did, it would only be for 1 day, July 7...to see Steel Pulse. It's shitty that they are playing a the same time as Furthur.

As far as the Molson Amphitheatre goes, I'm holding tickets for the Santana/Steve Winwood show and for RUSH. If I opt out of Steel Pulse, The Flaming Lips may also make the list.

I have nothing scheduled for August due to the fact that the woman & I are due to head out west. We're not sure whether we're going to San Fran or Seattle, but I'm sure we'll catch something wherever we go. We usually like to anyways. If it's the bay area I will be paying a premium to see Phish at The Greek in Berkeley, a venue that I haven't seen a show at (yet).

My buddy Sameer was able to secure us tickets for Roger Waters at the ACC. The Saturday night show. It's going to be fucking Epic. We'll have to bring edibles since the place is controlled by Nazis. That's Canada's big problem with concerts and the such (beer gardens??? WTF?), but I will lay off that topic since I have schedule some American stops. Ha ha.

I am going to catch Gord this year. I just haven't decided where. He's playing a free show over in Niagara Falls, NY which may be something to check out. Plus there's the poker rooms over there....

If you have any summer concert plans, I'd love to hear about them. Post a comment or drop a line.

No More Virgin Fests

Pin It Now!

So I read they canceled all the "Virgin Festivals" across Canada.  Good.  It was all bullshit anyway.  Just another way to wrap their logos around music and bands and try to sell you shit, to get you to sign up for this or that and tell you what's cool.  Branding.  We're sinking in it and starting not to notice.  The funny thing is most of the bands who played these things probably railed against such social antics during their rise to prominence only to now suck the Teet of a big payday.  The article suggest that maybe it's the economy, but I'm holding out hope that it may be society (youth) smartening up a bit.  You can only be shoveled shit for so long, right?  Maybe folks want to go somewhere where the music comes first, interactions with friends and others come first.  Maybe they just don't want to be sold something every step of the way.  Can you draw a parallel between this and the lack of attendance at Blue Jays games where Rogers is force fed to Everyone?  I don't know, but you could argue...

Another chit-chat with Gordie put into print ahead of the release of The Grand Bounce.  This time it's by Mike Doherty of the National Post.

If Gord Downie didn't exist, Canada would have to invent him. After all, who else unites such a wide spectrum of Canadians, from sensitive nature-worshippers to surly, lager-swilling brawlers? On his new solo album, The Grand Bounce, the Tragically Hip front man even sings about how the two extremes can have more in common than one may suspect -- although he comes down on the side of the softies.

"This country maybe needs to feel more vulnerable, act more vulnerable," Downie says. The rangy singer is elaborating on his song The Hard Canadian in an east-Toronto coffee shop, with a cup of java in front of him. The character is as uncommunicative as a sheet of rock in coldest February, but as Downie sings against a howling backdrop, the Hard Canadian drags a "brush through ... wet pigment," remembering the "glow" of someone's nightgown. His hardness is really just an act.

Read on where it was written...HERE.

CHART Attack Gord Downie Review

Pin It Now!

By Aaron Brophy @ CHART Attack....

I'm so jealous of Gord Downie. And it's not because he's considered a Canadian icon, or knows Harry Sinden, or because he's an independently wealthy rock star in The Tragically Hip.

No, it's because I increasingly get the sense that Downie lives his life in a world of magic realism, where the mundane frequently and suddenly becomes the fantastical and with a simple technicolour whirl of his wrists every newspaper clipping or geographical peculiarity he encounters transforms itself into a song.

Meanwhile, I'm back here down on earth worrying about my cat puking more when it gets really hot outside and trying to figure out why my hydro bill is 20 per cent higher.

In short, I'm jealous because Downie gets to be the art. With each passing year it feels more and more like he's transforming into some kind of art elemental, a living-in-his-own-head supernatural vacillating between our terrestrial world and a more sparkling one of his own creation.

The latest prompt for this jealous bolt would be The Grand Bounce, Downie's third solo record. Produced by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla, it's outwardly the most straight-forward and least "arty" record of his solo career, but that should be considered with some context.

Gord Downie and The Country of Miracles
The Grand Bounce
By Vish Khanna

Seven years since The Battle of the Nudes, the informal charm of the Country of Miracles is refined on The Grand Bounce, another remarkable offering by Gord Downie. In an introductory essay, Downie playfully recounts the inspiration for these songs, tonally encapsulating his open mindset for this band. Since emerging with 2001's Coke Machine Glow, Downie has explored a looser, relatively more lo-fi sound than that of the Tragically Hip's. And by recruiting underground aces Julie Doiron, Dave Clark, Dale Morningstar, Josh Finlayson and John Press for his band, Downie is surrounded by friends who inspire risk. Overseen by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, there's a hazy summertime vibe to The Grand Bounce that's perfect for cottage escapes and easy evenings. The mood is best exemplified on "Yellow Days," featuring a murky groove propelling its imagery to slow dance like no one's watching. But it's present elsewhere too; the festive stomp of "Moon Over Glenora" features a sweet Downie/Doiron duet and even the dynamic build of "The Dance and its Disappearance" is celebratory fun. Downie's songs may be more structured on The Grand Bounce, but that doesn't curb the Country of Miracles' enthusiasm.

Why spill so many beans in that essay?
Downie: Well, probably like any good fox, to throw off the scent to more beans that could be spilled, I suppose. In the past, I've held onto them like a pie maker who doesn't want you to see how I make it. But there's connectivity; people make things and go through a long, beautiful process to do it. I'd be selfish to not allow people to be part of that.

Your solo work seems less rickety now.
I hear what you're saying. On the earlier records, you could hear chairs scraping, doors closing, muttering and things that gave them a lot of personality. I was more interested in Chris getting together with these guys; his sonic sense with their spirit. It was a hunch that together we'd do something interesting and I think it does still hint at process.

Do you delineate songs for the Country of Miracles and the Hip?
No, I still adhere to the Raymond Carver adage: "Use it up; don't save a thing for later." That lets me sleep at night. I get it and use it and then whatever's up next, I do. (Universal)

Ottawa Bluesfest Line-up & Ticket Info

Pin It Now!

Hey All,

The line-up was just announced for Ottawa.  The bands are listed below.  You'll have to check out the official website for exact schedules.  Gord is there on July 9th @ 7:45pm.  I forget which corporately sponsored stage he's on, but it's one of them.

Maybe the sponsors do deserve some credit though.  This event is the best music value you can get maybe in North America outside of FREE shows.  The advanced price of a full Festival Passport in $230.00.  That allows you to come and go over almost 2 weeks with headliners each night.  You can't get into weekend festivals (Bonnaroo, Cochella, etc) for that much.  One Week Passports (5 days) are $140/150 and single day passes are around $40.  At least that's what it is on July 7th when FURTHUR is playing.  I'll be seeing these guys in Rochester at the Highland Bowl on June 25.  Smokin'.  They'll play 3 hours+.  It's just too bad Steel Pulse is on for the same night.

The prices listed above may be the advanced prices available only until Friday.  I'm not sure.  You can have a look for tickets over at www.capitaltickets.ca .  Type in the promo code: BLUES.  The official Bluesfest site is http://www.ottawabluesfest.ca/.

Gord Downie Album & Tour

Pin It Now!

From Chart Attack....

It's been seven years since Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie put out a solo album, but that long gap between records will end on June 8, when his latest solo record drops.

The disc doesn't have a title yet and there's no other information other than a graphic posted on Downie's official website announcing the LP's release date.

At any rate, it will be the follow-up to 2003's Battle Of The Nudes, which featured guest appearances from Julie Doiron, Skydiggers' Josh Finlayson and members of The Dinner Is Ruined (who were billed on the disc and Downie's 2001 Coke Machine Glow debut as The Country Of Miracles).

For now, you can see Downie with The Country Of Miracles at Belleville, Ont.'s Big Music Fest on June 19 at the city's East Zwicks Park.

The lineup also includes sets by headliners ZZ Top along with Collective Soul, Finger Eleven, Big Sugar, Karl Wolf and Danny Fernandes. Tickets are on sale now at Kelsey's in Belleville, Peterborough, Ont. and Lindsay, Ont. and will run you $49.50.

Rockin' and Swillin' at the Olympics

Pin It Now!

Well, this is a pretty exciting time for the world, or the winterized world anyway and no place more so than right here in Canada. It's pretty special when your country can host an event such as this. We have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to be proud of too. What a stage to be able to show off our assets...modernism, landscapes, democracy (when they aren't on break), art, music, BC Bud, food and drink.

I'll be posting some Olympic stuff here. Most likely as it relates to music and hockey. If you like to gamble on hockey (why not, eh?) I'll be post my thoughs on the subject over at mrjackstrawSays.

Check out the Vancouver Sun article on The Hockey House...

"Part of our facility is the spontaneity," Bitove said.

"You never know who is going to be onstage, what's going to happen, who's going to be up jamming. That was part of Tyler Stewart's vision around the entertainment -- he wanted to get up there and jam. It could be Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip, it could be Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, whoever.

"He did that a little bit in Salt Lake, and it was a huge hit so he wants to bring that here: Every night a surprise."

Olympic Music

Pin It Now!

It's always a big deal to Canadians whenever we are front and center on the World Stage, how we come off looking. I think the reason for this is a combination of Pride along with a small Inferiority Complex. We spend a lot of our time in the shadow of the elephant and when we do emerge, we don't want to fuck it up. The US does Big Time better than anyone. Big occasion, big venue, big entertainment, and big production. It's quite amazing actually.

I enjoyed reading the article below. See my comments after the article and feel free to leave your own.

Pique'n'yer Interest
Show of force

By Andrew Mitchell

Back in "the day" governments really knew how to put on a show of force. Tanks and missile launchers plodding across Red Square while soldiers marched behind in lockstep, a president striding around the deck of an aircraft carrier in a flight suit beneath a "Mission Accomplished" banner, his bulge prominently displayed beneath his parachute straps. Sadly, only China and North Korea have kept this proud tradition alive.

Canada has never been one for the show of force (although we have sent the odd jet squadron over a Grey Cup), which is probably because our strength has never been in arms. However, our lack of military might has never stopped us from rocking the free world to its foundations. From a cultural perspective we are a bona fide nuclear power - so why not use the Olympics to flaunt it?

When the Olympics come to Vancouver and Whistler the medal ceremonies will be followed by musical guests. While I like the lineup for the most part (and there are a few spots still being confirmed) something is definitely missing. I'm wondering where the show of power is, the musical acts and entertainers to bring the world to its knees?

I know money is an issue for organizers, but this is a chance to show the world what we're all about, while bringing Canadians closer together in a show of national pride. No expense should have been spared. It's like throwing the world's most lavish birthday party then skimping on a cake.

Where, for example, is Rush? I know that not everyone is a fan, but their 30th anniversary concert tour in support of Snakes and Arrows was one of the best selling concert tours of 2007-08 and they remain one of the biggest stadium bands of all time.

And where is the Tragically Hip? We always lament the fact that this stellar band and incredible live act has never found success outside of Canada and then we deny them an opportunity to reach the widest audience ever.

If we really want to show off, where is the Leonard Cohen show? Where is Celine Dion, for that matter (not one of my own personal favourites, but still one of the best-selling artists of all time)? Where is Sarah McLachlin? Shania Twain? Alanis Morissette?

They got Burton Cummings to play Vancouver but where are Randy Bachman and the rest of the Guess Who? How about Neil Young, who spent his formative years in Winnipeg and Toronto? And why not Bryan Adams, who actually wrote the song that accompanied our bid video for Pete's sake! Billboard magazine picked Nickelback as the band of the decade (again, not my personal favourite) but you wouldn't know it by the Olympic lineup.

Looking forward, where are the Stills, Broken Social Scene, Black Mountain, Sloan, Dragonette, The New Pornographers, Sam Roberts Band, Arcade Fire, Alexis On Fire, Tokyo Police Club, Metric or any of the dozens of new music bands that put Canada on the musical map once again?

And where, for the Love of Mike, is Stompin' Tom Connors?

That's just for starters because music should only be one component of our show of force. Why not use the Games to showcase our comedians as well as our musicians? The Kids In The Hall could do sketch comedy on one night, Bob and Doug McKenzie another, the Trailer Park Boys the next. Why not reunite the cast of SCTV for one night only? I'm sure the National Lampoon's Band Camp factory would probably let Eugene Levy out for a couple of weeks in between sequels.

We should have stand-up comedy from Norm McDonald, Russell Peters and Harland Williams. Mike Myers could show up dressed as Austin Powers and play a set with his band Ming Tea. Michael Cera could stand around looking awkward for half an hour and still draw rave reviews for it. Seth Rogen could spark up a joint of B.C. Bud in an easy chair and tell the crowds his Jewish summer camp stories.

And where the hell is Cirque du Soleil? While Cirque is hardly new anymore, there is really no company on the planet that does spectacle better. Despite criticisms of their performance at the closing ceremonies of the Torino Games I thought they did an awesome job and should probably be on stage every night during the Games.

Kenny Vs. Spenny should have a different challenge every night. There should be late night screenings of the extremely funny Jon Dore show in public squares. Tom Green should be encased in a plastic bubble and forced to do his web show 24 hours a day.

Why, I ask, did we hire INXS to play Vancouver or Usher to play Whistler? Why cede one inch of stage to performers from outside Canada when we're more than capable of filling that space with homegrown talent?

The organizers and our governments keep telling us that the Olympics are our "time to shine," in which case I don't see why we would share the spotlight with anyone - it's our spotlight to hog.

OK. I like what Andrew is trying to promote here and I agree with him on some levels. The only problem I have is that to follow his plan might over-do it a bit. I know this is a Tragically Hip themed blog, but at the end of the day from the Global Perspective, they just don't register. Would they do one of their TV/radio friendly "Pop" songs? I don't think that is The Hip that Andrew's talking about if he is a fan. The Hip are at their best when they're getting down and dirty, jamming as Gordie rants and pops blood vessels.

I also don't think the Olympics is the time to introduce new (to them) products to the world. How many people will get Trailer Park Boys, Bob & Doug, Kenny vs Spenny? There is always a lost in translation factor when projection to a global audience.

So what would work? Andrew mentioned a bunch of names and groups that are internationally recognized and loved. Rush, Adams, Cohen, Dion, Young, Joni Mitchell, Cirque, Mike Myers, Dan Aykroyd for starters. We should have entertainment that represents our country from coast-to-coast-to-coast. We should also have room for international talent as well since this is a global showcase. We just happen to be hosting it.

Now that we have come fully into HD broadcasts, the real star will be BC. Vancouver & Whistler are going to sparkle and these events are going to look amazing. At the end of the day it will be the athletes and the setting that will make up the lasting memories for visitors and viewers alike and not who played a song after the 2-Man Bobsled medal ceremony. After all, if people are tuning in just to see a musical act, I think they may be missing the point of the entire exercise.
